The Power of Love: PUB 5

Throughout an individual’s life, one will meet a number of people that they find interest in. Some will come and go, and others have the power to leave an imprint on an individual’s life. However, until a person meets that someone who impacts their life tremendously, it often isn’t true love they’re dealing with. True love is powerful and mighty. It has the ability to transform an individual as well as fulfill one’s life. Real love is genuine love that leaves an individual feeling happy and content. It is the type of love that is worth fighting for. True love is unconditional love.

In the song H.O.L.Y. by Florida Georgia Line, real love is presented through the lyrics. The song describes someone who is at a really low point in their life. The song writer speaks out about how they are stuck in “darkness all broken hearted.” The song starts off with a sad and hopeless tone, however, by the end of the second verse the tone shifts. The song picks up and the song writer starts discussing how he fell in love and how this lover “broke through and saved” him. The man’s significant other clearly had the power to change his life for the better and she helped him find happiness and light even in “the darkest nights.” The lyrics create an intense image of true love and what is has the ability to do. True love leaves individuals feeling high and unstoppable, just as the song describes this love to be. The song writer compares his love to “ecstasy,” saying he is high on loving her. She makes him feel alive and new. The tone is very powerful and moving.

In the poem “Touched by an Angel,” by Maya Angelou, the author is writing about the power of true love. Similarly, to the song H.O.L.Y. by Florida Georgia Line, the poet starts off the poem by saying how people “live coiled in shells of loneliness” until love comes along and gives one life. The poem progresses as Angelou writes how when love arrives “in its train come ecstasies,” meaning that people can feel as if they are high when they fall in love. This is similar to the lyrics written in H.O.L.Y. when the writer sings to his lover “you’re my ecstasy.” Lastly, the song and the poem are very similar regarding the sense of freedom one feels when they find true love. In the song H.O.L.Y., Florida Georgia Line writes, “You’re the river bank where I was baptized, cleanse all the demons, that were killing my freedom.” In relation, Angelou writes “Yet it is only love which sets us free.” Both the artist and the poet are developing a theme that relates to the power of love. They both portray love as a very strong force that can have a major impact on an individual, often setting one free.

True love can often provide a state of ultimate bliss for an individual. It has the power to fill the missing pieces to a person’s heart and soul. In the poem “The Power of Love,” by Phyllis Strong, the author writes about all that love can do for a person. The poet describes how love is transformative. It can “put light in the dark eyes of depression” and it can mend a “heart that is broken,” making it whole again, just as the writer was describing in the song H.O.L.Y. Both artists acknowledge the intense effects of genuine love and how altering love can really be.

In the song and the two poems explained above, there are very similar tones and themes present. All three of the writers describe a life without love compared to a life full of love. The audience is able to see the difference between the two. The three pieces of literature begin with more of a hopeless and sad kind of tone. However, as the song and poems progress, so does the love they are discussing. As the love grows deeper it becomes more powerful, transforming the individual. With this transformation also comes a shift in tones. The tones become more hopeful and powerful. The audience is able to feel what the writers are feeling. The emotions are evident through their words and lyrics. It is obvious that the artists have experienced this type of love that has flooded their lives with happiness. The theme that is seen throughout all three works is emphasizing the abilities love has. It shows how an individual finds love in a time where it is most needed and when one is least expecting it. This love can manifest, making their lives grow with it.

It is often said, “Loving is more important than living; without love, life has no meaning.” The power of love is one stronger than many others. Without love life is empty. True love gives a person something to hold onto. It helps an individual grow and learn as a person. This kind of love can change and mold an individual, making their life worth living.
